August Newsletter

I hope you have all enjoyed your summer break and looking forward to HALDS meetings/social calendar between Sept – December 2014. We have some informative speakers coming along during Sept & October. If you haven’t been to a meeting for a while or not at all, please come along and give us a try, I am sure you will be pleased with what is on offer and the information we have for you., or if members have any friends who you may think would benefit from HALDS please let them know about us.

It’s with sadness I have to advise that future trips will still cost £5, but where money has been paid out for tickets etc, I am going to have to ask for full amount when putting down your name, this will then be refunded on the day when you come along to the event. Over the last 2 events (Lion King & Coronation Street) we have wasted approx. £200 due to members not turning up for events, which would have paid for a lunch out. I know things can happen which could prevent you attending, but a simple phone call to advise before hand, would enable me to see if anyone else wants to attend, we had a waiting list for Lion King.

Our next events Bowling/Lunch and Dobies/Lunch there will be no extra charge as costs will be paid on the day and not in advance. Though you will loose your £5 if you do not turn up to the event, as transport will have been booked for you and also £5 deposits paid

July Newsletter

July Meeting– We had 2 meetings on Monday 21st. July, the first one was at 11am with Halton Borough Council and CCG – this will followed at 1pm with a meeting between Halton Borough Council and Mark Arnold, Transport Manager of Halton Community Transport. Both meetings went very well and the carers were able to speak about problems which they have in their caring role, it gave HBC plenty to think about, as Steves comments ‘Yesterday was really productive – given us some ideas for developing information services for carers’

They also wanted to know the best way to get information to carers and all who attended commented they would like the information to go through HALDS meetings, so this makes it more important that you attend meetings to help you with your caring role, as although I send out newsletters I cannot always put down all that was said at the meetings into the newsletter, just the basics. Also it gets you out and mixing with friends who can all empathise with your caring role.

The transport manager spoke to the meeting about Door to Door transport, this can be booked on 0151 257 2410 they operate a fleet of 18 accessible and non-accessible minibuses with up to 16 seats and 4 accessible and non-accessible coaches with up to 53 seats.

Cost per journey is £2.20, even if you have a free bus pass, you still have to pay this cost as its door to door. Your cared for can use this form of transport, but there is no escorts on the bus and also they no longer take block bookings. The block bookings they do have they still honour. If your trip is for a medical appointment you can book in advance but for any other trip you book the day before. The first bus is at 8.50am. Please note when booking you have to be flexible. He also informed us that when the new Mersey gateway is built Blue Badge holders have free access over the bridge, therefore do not have to pay toll.

New rights will normalise flexibility at work – Did you know that recent changes in employment law mean that – for the first time – all carers now have the right to request flexible working.

Previously this right was only available to certain parents and carers – for example, those caring for a non-family member who did not live with them were excluded.

We believe that the extension of these rights will help to ‘normalise’ flexible working – so that people with caring responsibilities feel more able to come forward and ask for flexibility from their employers.

Now that most of Halton Residents have their bins emptied fortnightly, if you would like to have your bin cleaned fortnightly or monthly, please contact TDL Wheelie Bin Cleaners on 07543 133796 to see if they cover your area, unfortunately they only do Runcorn, but if any Widnes members know of a Wheelie Bin Cleaner in Widnes please let me know. For £2.50 or £1.50 for pensioners they clean and disinfect inside and outside your bin.

Hope you all have a good summer holiday and looking forward to seeing you all back in September, if you have any friends who are carers of an adult with a learning disability tell them about HALDS and bring them along to a meeting.

Even if you are unsure, I will coach you every step of the way.

Meeting 21st July – We are now holding a meeting on Monday 21st July at 12.30 for lunch as normal, this meeting will be with the manager of Community Transport. To explain further, you used to be able to block book transport for your cared for if they were attending college or work, but this service no longer seems to be available. Last year a number of HALDS members attended a meeting with Halton Borough Council to discuss issues and transport came up as a big issue, as we have to run our cared for everywhere. Steve Eastwood has arranged this meeting for us to air our views!!! This meeting is open to any carer of an Adult with Learning Disability, not just HALDS members, so if you know anyone who this could affect please invite them along. If you would like more details, please contact me.

Meeting Wed 23rd June 10am – Steve Eastwood is also inviting along carers of Adults with a Learning Disability to a meeting at Runcorn Town Hall. This meeting will be with HBC and CCG (Clinical Carer Commission, who took over the NHS) they want to know the best way to get advice and information to carers and would like your voice in this matter. If you would be interested in attending please let me know and I will pass your name to Steve Eastwood.
