Newsletter – July 2015

At Julys meeting we had Richard Clabrough from The Red Cross who came along to talk to us and demonstrate first aid. Topics covered where choking in both adults and babies, how to give chest compressions in both adults and babies, heart attacks, strokes and epilepsy. It was a very enjoyable hands on session.

Funding – Last Thursday I met with Phil from John Moores re our funding application, normally groups are only allowed 3 years funding, which we have had, but he is putting our bid to panel on September 24th, so I will know for our meeting end September. If this is turned down, we will have to use any fund raising funds that we do ourselves for running costs.

Southport Flower Show – Thursday 20th August – £5 per person for HALDS members this includes your entrance and coach, Non-members will be £18 per person. I have booked a 7 seater people carrier for this trip which is leaving Beechwood Pub, Beechwood Ave, Runcorn at 9am and then leaving Southport 6pm for the journey home

Phantom of the Opera – Brindley Theatre Wed 9h SeptemberNOT FRIDAY 11TH – Cost to members and their cared for is £5, non members will be cost of ticket £13. Please meet in foyer at 7pm where Jan will have your tickets. If you would like to attend this show please let me know by Monday 3rd August to enable me to purchase the reserved seats.

Mon 21st September – Lunch at Ring of Bells – Meet at Ring O Bells, Farnworth, Widnes at 12noon 

Fri 25th September, Beechwood Centre, Beechwood, Runcorn – End of Summer party – tickets £3 each, bring your own food. This will be a fun fund raising event and entertainment will be our own Adam Stringer as DJ. Dress is Flamboyant summer wear. I am collecting raffle prizes for the event. Please ask your friends and family to come along to this fund raising event. At present we have only sold 24 tickets, please support your group as without support we do not receive any funds

Visit to Dunham Massey/Stamford Military Hospital, Monday 12th October – We will be leaving Runcorn Old Town bus station at 9.15 am and will be leaving to come home 3pmish, Cost will be £5 unless you are a National Trust member and you bring your card along on the day for free admission.   Please let me know if you are a National Trust member. This is required for application form.

ALD Forum, Carers Centre – on 28th October, the Halton Carers Centre are holding an Adults with Learning Disability Forum at the Stobart Stadium, they are asking for our input of what we would like at this forum. I.e. stalls, speakers etc.

This was discussed at the meeting and all the ideas I will put to the Carers Centre and let you know the ternary for the forum at the September meeting.

Theatre Shows – We have 3 theatre shows for you to decide which one you would like to attend, we thought to be fair you can only have one show at the £5 per person price, if you want to attend more shows you can do, but you will have to pay the full price for your tickets. All coach fares will be paid by HALDS, Please see shows below for you to pick from. Please let me know if you wish to attend any of these shows by Monday 3rd August to enable me to send off payment for the reserved seats. 

  • Mary Poppins – Manchester Palace Theatre – Wed 24th Feb 2016 at 7.30pm, coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45Full cost £49 per ticket
  • Mamma Mia – Manchester Palace Theatre – Tues 17th May 2016 at 7.30pm coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45 – Full cost £43.50 a ticket
  • Jersey Boys – Manchester Opera House – Wednesday 4th November 2015 at 7.30 performance – Coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45 and Widnes Stobart Stadium at 5.55pm – Full cost £40.50 a ticket.

Christmas Fair – Monday 23rd November, in place of the meeting on Monday 30th November ,we are going to be holding our Christmas Fair on 23rd November, will be collecting raffle prizes and tombola goodies nearer the time. If you know anyone who would like a stall at this event, please let me know

Pontysyllte Aqueduct Mulled Wine Cruise, Llangollen – Sun 6th Dec – We are having a Christmas cruise, it is a 2 hour cruise along the aqueduct with mulled wine and mine pies, Christmas music and santa, then a bus will bring us back to Llangollen, we will then go to a pub on the way home for a meal. Cost £5 for HALDS members and their cared for, Non members will be £12.50 plus cost of their meal- Coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 1pm 

HALDS Christmas Party – Friday 11th December at Mencap Acorn Centre – all invited, please bring your own supper and drinks. Entertainment will be by our very own Adam Stringer as DJ

Monday 11th January – Trip to Rivendell Garden Centre, Widnes and lunch at Trigger Pond, Warrington – more details at a later date

Weekend in Elgin Hotel, Blackpool – £98 per person 29th January – 2 nights Dinner Bed & Breakfast and Sunday Lunch – Fancy a weekend away in Blackpool to get over the Christmas festivities. We can select our own entertainment, it was decided at the meeting that we would have a ‘Grease’ theme for the Saturday evening. For members who have put their names down, the rooms are now reserved, I will need a deposit of £50 at the September meeting and balance by end December/early Jan. Please let me know asap if you would like to attend this weekend away.    

HALDS Birthday Party – Friday 26th February at the Beechwood Centre, Runcorn. This will be to celebrate HALDS 6th Birthday and also be a funding raising event.   Tickets will be on sale from October.

Comedy Coach Tour of Liverpool – Due to the high cost of this coach tour, £18 for 45 minutes, we decided not to have this social event. 

The Esplanade Hotel April 15th 2016 – We are having a weekend away at The Esplanade Hotel in Llandudno, It is a hotel within the Safe Hands group, which caters for all types of disabilities. The hotel has been fully renovated and modernized over the past year with an investment of £3.5million, and only opened for business in February this year. The rooms now include modern access shower facilities with shower chair/commodes. Most rooms have an electric profile bed with built in bedsides and either overhead tracking hoist or electric manual hoists. The Esplanade also boasts a beautiful modernized ground floor area with a fully accessible restaurant and Sea view lounge / cabaret bar which is the ideal place to relax and unwind for lunch, take in the views over afternoon tea or enjoy our nightly entertainment programme. Our restaurant offers a varied menu with something to suit everyone and of course our Chef is happy to accommodate any special dietary needs. Full cost for the weekend would be £175 per person for 3 nights plus transport and £140 for 2 nights which includes dinner, bed & breakfast and evening entertainment. We have £5k towards this weekend away, Cost per head will be depend on how many people want to attend. Please let me know if you want to attend this weekend away, I will be asking for £50 per person deposit to be paid by the October meeting.

Belle Vue Dog Racing – We are looking at going to the Dog racing at Belle Vue in May 2016, it will be a Friday evening, more details to follow, please let me know if you are interested in attending.

Narrowboat day trip – I am looking into a day trip on a narrowboat in June , further details at a later day

Halton U3A, there is to be a Halton U3A Inaugural Meeting on Wednesday 29 July 2015, 2.00 at the Brindley. If you are looking to join a new group with various activities please come along to find out more.

Runcorn Community Choir – Do you love to sing? Come and join our friendly group on Tuesdays 7.30pm at Churchill Hall, Cooper Street, Runcorn, WA7 1DH. We re-open for the autumn on Sept 8th for more information email: runcorncommunitychoir@gmail.com   No auditions required

If you are a main carer for a patient who is an inpatient at Warrington/Halton NHS Trust you can ask the hospital for a carer card which entitles the carer to open visiting

Our next meeting is Monday 28th September when we have Sue Molyneux and Pam Batey coming along from Disability Partnership.
