Newsletter – Dec 2015 

All the Christmas festivities are now over and its time to look forward to a new year with new resolutions, hope one of these resolutions is to keep in touch with HALDS and attend meetings and social events.

HALDS had a good run up to Christmas with plenty going on, our Christmas Cruise and Meal at Bryn Howel Hotel went well and all who attended seemed to have enjoyed the event, we also had our own Christmas Party and also we attended the Patient Connect Christmas party, were some of us ended up on TV!!!

Funding – We never had a raffle at the Christmas party in place we had a collection tin for members who wanted to make a donation in place of sending Christmas cards, we collected £126 at the event. Many thanks for your generous donations.

Webb Ivory fund raising – Up to now we have made £52.61 on the Webb Ivory Catalogue, money for goods is still due in and all payments have to be made by end Jan, as I need to pay by 1st February, I will then give you a total of what HALDS received as part of this fund raising event.

We hope to be busy in the new year starting with our trip to Rivendell Garden Centre and meal afterwards at the Trigger Pond on Monday 11th January, if you would like to attend this event, please let me know, cost is £5. I do need your menu choices as a matter of urgency, so if you haven’t let me know your requirements please do so straightaway, to save me having to chase members. Coach is leaving Runcorn Old Town bus station at 10am and Widnes Stobart stadium at 10.10am, will be leaving Trigger Pond for return journey home 2pm approx.  Names can still be added onto this event, please contact me if you would like to attend.

Some of us will then be having a break away at the Elgin Hotel, Blackpool on 29th January, Coach will pick up Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 1pm and Widnes Stobart Stadium 1.10pm and return home on the Sunday afternoon 3.30pm.  Cost of the coach is £12 each which I will collect during the weekend.  Theme for Saturday evening is ‘Grease’ so get out your 50s costumes for an evening at ‘Ryedale High’.

To raise funds for the group we are holding our 6th Birthday party/fund raising evening on Friday 26th February at the Beechwood Centre, Runcorn. Tickets now on sale £3 each.  Please try and support this dance by selling tickets to friends and family, as without these events HALDS will run out of funding. There will be a disco, bar but bring along your own eats.  Raffle prizes now being sort, ask at your local shops, hairdressers, eating places etc for gift vouchers for raffle prizes. 

Mary Poppins, 24th February – For the members who have booked tickets for Mary Poppins at Manchester on 24th February, the coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45pm  

The Esplanade Hotel April 15th 2016 –   Full cost  for the weekend should be £175 per person for 3 nights plus transport and £140 for 2 nights which includes dinner, bed & breakfast and evening entertainment. We have £5k towards this weekend, Cost per head for HALDS members will be depending on how many people want to attend.  Will let you know in the new year what final cost is going to be. Non members will be full price.  If you are thinking about joining us for the weekend in Llandudno please let me know by end January, I can then let members know the final cost. Coach price will be extra.

Make sure your cared for gets their annual medical check

Contact your electricity supplier and get £140 warm home grant, its eligible for      people receiving benefits, i.e. income support, pension credit etc. contact your supplier for further details.

Halton Carers Centre is moving back to their old premises at 62 Church Street on 6th January and will be open to carers on 11th January, come along and see their new building, there are now new therapy rooms, meeting rooms etc.

NHS Urgent Carer Centres – The New Urgent care centre has now opened in Widnes its placed at Oaks Place, Caldwell Road, Widnes, WA8 7GD. The Runcorn Urgent Care centre opened earlier this year at Hospital Way, Runcorn, WA7 2DA.  At both of these urgent care centres you are able to get Expert urgent care treatment with no appointment needed, 365 days a year access from 7am – 10pm, expert diagnostics including on-site x-ray, ability to see a doctor, Specialist staff to treat children for minor illness and injuries and free on-site parking.     

Sainsburys are offering a new service of telephoning your order through to them on 0800 636 262 option 2 then option 3. This is open to any carer who does not have access to internet for online shopping and struggle to get out shopping due to their caring role, you simply ring through to order for shopping over the phone.

Beechwood Swimming Baths, Runcorn – Beechwood swimming pool are holding swimming lessons for Adults & children with disabilities, there is 1-2-1 and group bookings available with a fully qualified swimming instructor, for further information contact Simon Neild on 01928 565014

Walking Group – The Adult Learning Disablity Team are holding Walking Groups on Mondays at 1pm (meet outside the Café in the Park) at Victoria Park, Widnes, after the walk meet at 1.30 in the café for a coffee/snack. For more information tel LD Nursing Team on 0151 511 6606

Counselling Service – Mid Mersey age UK are offering Counselling Services for age 50+, it is set in confidential settings throughout Halton and St Helens with a counsellor who will listen and help you explore and understand your feelings. Halton Peoples Health Forum event – Halton Peoples are holding an event on Thursday 4th February 2016 5-7pm at the Studio, The Brindley, Runcorn and also Tuesday 9th February 1-3pm at Karalius Suite, Halton Stadium, Widnes.  Items covered will be How Haltons Health Budget is spent and Show me the Money.  During registration the Health Improvement team will be available to offer  BMI checks and Healthy Lifestyle advice.  If you would like to attend any of these events please contact Alex.schofield@haltonccg.nhs.uk or telephone01928 593455

At todays meeting we had a very informative and enjoyable talk about the New Care Act from Gary Cleland from Halton Borough Council. It was very uplifting with his funny stories.  As carers you are all entitled to an assessment as also is your cared for, to book an assessment with Halton Borough Council, please telephone 0151 511 7676 and ask for a Carers Assessment.

ALD Forum, Carers Centre – 28th October, the Halton Carers Centre are holding an Adults with Learning Disability Forum at the Stobart Stadium,  speakers being invited are  Hugh Jones Solicitor about Wills & Trust funds, Lisa Birtle-Smith talking about friendships & Relationships, Lorraine Dutton from Alzheimers Society talking about Dementia in ALDS, .  Please try and attend this event, the times will be registration from 10am to 3pm or whenever you are able to make it.

There will be stalls which will be interesting and providing information about your caring role and lunch will be provided. You do not need an invite from Halton Carers Centre for this event, so even if you live outside the borough you are still able to attend this event.

This event is being organised by HALDS/Halton Speak Out and Halton Carers Centre. I have ordered a roll up poster advertising HALDS, also T-shirts for members who have volunteered to man the HALDS stand, I will bring these with me on the day.

If you have a Webb Ivory Catalogue, could you please let me know what you want to order by end Oct to enable me to place the order.

Halton British Legion Xmas Disco – Monday 7th December, I now have the forms for the Legion xmas disco, if you would like your cared for to attend, please let me know and I will send you a form to fill in and return to Eileen Ludgate.

Theatre Shows – All the theatre shows are now booked, I am unable to take any more bookings, as all tickets are paid for and received. Could I please ask, if you are unable to make any of the shows PLEASE  let me know on the day asap, I know emergencies happen, but if you could NOT JUST NOT TURN UP, as these tickets have cost between £40 – £50 each. If you would like to attend but haven’t put your name down, I can put you on a stand by list in case of cancellations

  • Jersey Boys – Manchester Opera House – Wednesday 4th November 2015 at 7.30 performance – Coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45 and Widnes Stobart Stadium at 5.55pm
  • Mary Poppins – Manchester Palace Theatre – Wed 24th Feb 2016 at 7.30pm, coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45 and Widnes Stobart Stadium at 5.55pm  
  • Mamma Mia – Manchester Palace Theatre – Tues 17th May 2016 at 7.30pm coach will be leaving Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 5.45 and Widnes Stobart Stadium at 5.55pm  

Pontysyllte Aqueduct Mulled Wine Cruise, Llangollen – Sun 6th Dec – We are having a Christmas cruise followed by a Christmas meal, it is a 2 hour cruise along the aqueduct with mulled wine and mine pies, Christmas music and santa, followed by a Christmas Meal at the Bryn Howel Hotel, Llangollen.  Menus for meal selection were given out at the meeting, please let me have them back asap with your selection,  if you were not at the October meeting if you could please contact me to enable me to get your choice of menu.  Coach will be leaving Widnes Stobart Stadium at 12 noon and Runcorn Old Town Bus station at 12.15.  This trip is now fully booked – If you haven’t paid your £5 please let me have it asap

Christmas Fair – Monday 23rd November, in place of the meeting on Monday 30th November, we are going to be holding our Christmas Fair on 23rd November.  There will be a number of stalls at this event, plus lunches for all, please bring along friends and family to this event at the normal meeting time of 12/12.30.   We will also be having a Christmas Bingo at 1.30.

HALDS Christmas Party – Friday 11th December at Mencap Acorn Centre – all invited, please bring your own supper and drinks.  Entertainment will be by our very own Adam Stringer as DJ

Elgin Hotel, Blackpool – £98 per person 29th January – 2 nights Dinner Bed & Breakfast and Sunday Lunch – Fancy a weekend away in Blackpool to get over the Christmas festivities.  As there are now only 17 of us going to the Elgin, we will be unable to have our own entertainment room, theme for Saturday evening is Grease/Saturday Night Fever so get out your flares and get boogying on the dance floor.  If you would like to come along please let me know.

Belle Vue Dog Racing – We are looking at going to the Dog racing at Belle Vue in May 2016, it will be a Friday evening, more details to follow, please let me know if you are interested in attending.

Narrowboat day trip – I am looking into a day trip on a narrowboat in June, further details at a later day
