February Newsletter

Newsletter – Feb 2016

Our guest speakers for February meetings were Michelle from Connect/Access to Support who came along to tell us about both Connect and Access to Support also Becky from The Vikings, to tell us about a large pot of funding from CCG to last 3 years they have received for sports within Adults with Learning Disabilities, so she came along to our meeting to ask for our ideas.

Michelle informed us firstly about Connect which is a voluntary organisation, every Thursday they hold a group at the Methodist Church in Halton Village 6.30/7pm – 9pm, anyone can go along, it’s a relaxed atmosphere, they do craft sessions, play pool, karaoke, bingo, trips out, tribute acts, bbqs, its whatever the guys want to do, the youngest in the group is 18 and the eldest 73, so it’s a wide age group. You are welcome to come along with your cared for to see what the group is all about, cost is £2.50 which includes a cup of tea and a biscuit, there is also a tuck shop there to buy other goodies.   They also have a football team, each Monday evening at Brookvale Rec at 6.30 followed by a pub social visit, they have annual football award evenings where the Halton major comes along to present the cups and medals and lastly on a Tuesday on a fortnightly basis they hold a nightclub at the Canalside.  For further details of any of the above please contact Michelle on 07759296116 or 01928 5808800.

Michelle also told us about Access to Support which was started up 4 years ago as a Support Agency, it’s a small agency which offers group events and also 1 to 1 support. Group events consist of ice skating, outings, bowling, cinema, theatre etc.  They also help people into work placements i.e. B & M, gardening, delivering library books to housebound people, cafes etc.  They have holidays abroad and in the UK and the last weekend of the month they go for a full day out with the group. They offer support in the homes. Also every Tuesday Michelle and Steve her husband (who are both former teachers) take a group for a transition programme, were they have tea and a natter about what’s been going on during the past week, they learn them numeracy and literacy skills, budgeting, money and staying safe just a few of what goes on in these sessions.  Again if you are interested in more information about Access to Support telephone  Michelle on 07759296116 or 01928 5808800.

Becky from Vikings Sports Foundation came along to tell us about the large pot of funding they have received from CCG for a 3 year project, part of which is to be used for sport activities within Adults with learning disabilities. She is looking for ideas from us of what we would like for sporting activities for both ourselves and our cared fors, Becky suggested weekly sessions at the gym and touch rugby.  We are going to start off with a tour of the stadium on Monday 4th April at 1pm, where we will have a  tour of the stadium, play on the pitch, followed by cup of tea and a chat about what type of activities we would be interested in, if you would like to come along on the tour please let me know asap, to enable me to let Becky know numbers.

FundingSponsored swim – Janet Eddleston who is a friend of Peter McPartlands daughter kindly did a sponsored swim for HALDS, she swam 1 mile in 30 minutes. All together we raised £342.40 for our funds from Janets swim, once again many thanks to Janet and all who sponsored her.

I am applying for funding from Peel Ports and Community Development Fund for running costs and costs to hold 2 promotional/consultation events, one in Widnes and the other in Runcorn.  We will have to hold a committee meeting to discuss these events.  Also I am applying for further funding for us to hold up to 6 events during the next 12 months which are fun events, all ideas welcome.  i.e. Art session, music session & health session etc.

PIP is raising its head again, it came into being a few years ago, but now people who were on DLA for life are now starting to be re-assessed, Sue Molyneux will talk to you about this at Marchs meeting, I believe Welfare rights will come out to your house for carers of special needs to help fill in the form.

ATG tickets – If you book any tickets for yourself and your cared for, the carer should be able to get their tickets for free, they do not advertise this fact, but ask when booking tickets. This also applies when purchasing football, rugby tickets and Liverpool Arena

Home Energy Assessment – I recently contacted my fuel supplier N Power to give meter readings and I was asked if I would like to do a short survey on my home energy which I did, with having Andrew on benefits we were able to purchase a new boiler for a 3rd of the price it would have cost.  It would be worth contacting your fuel supplier and asking them for a Home energy assessment, they will pay for loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and also look at your boiler etc. ours was only 11 years old but it’s classed as old.  The government are looking at the carbon footprint of houses in UK.

HALDS Birthday Party – We raised a total of £410.00 and a good time was had by all.
