October newsletter

Our guest speaker for Septembers meeting was Natalie Marron who came along to talk to us about ‘Care in the Chemist’ and how it can benefit you all as carers.

Care in the Chemist is a minor condition scheme, which means people who get free prescriptions can receive advice and treatment for a range of conditions direct from their pharmacist rather than going to your GP. This scheme is for all pharmacies in the Halton area, except Boots in Weavervale & Brookvale practices.  When going into the pharmacy let them know you want to use ‘Care in the Chemist’  Information was given out at the meeting showing a list of conditions that can be treated under this scheme, if you where unable to attend, I have leaflets which I can pass out to you.

Hugh Jones Solicitors – At our last meeting Hugh and Fiona came from Hugh Jones Solicitors to talk to us about Wills and Trust funds, result from this was Fiona came down to Runcorn last Friday to visit 6 members and now their Wills and Trust funds have been sorted, Fiona advised that they would also check over any members existing wills if you would like yours checking.   There is no charge for checking wills of HALDS members, but if there are any amendments required this would then be charged for.

Hugh told us about Deputyship which is an application to the Court of Protection for a deputyship and it is in 2 parts, Financial and Welfare Decisions.  A deputyship is required for example, if your cared for has a bank account in their name and also your name to enable you to handle the account, but say you are ill or pass away suddenly, this causes a problem with their account, so a deputyship could be taken out with a sibling or other family member to enable them to sort out the finances of your cared for.    This is also in the place of Welfare Decisions, in case you are ever unable to make decisions for them.  To apply for deputyship is £400, but Hugh mentioned that many of our cared for are likely to be able to apply for fee remission due to them being on benefits and as long as they have savings below £6k in their own name.    If you are interested in setting up a deputyship, Fiona will be coming along to a separate meeting one Monday morning – date to be advised – when she will witness signatures of the Wills & Trust funds set up on her visit if required and also advise on how to complete the Deputyship forms,  Hugh Jones solicitors will check over your forms after you have completed them for a small fee – to be advised.  The only thing you will need is a letter from your doctor advising your cared for has a lack of capacity to manage their affairs.
