We had 2 very interesting speakers for Januarys meeting Sue Molyneux from Halton Disability Partnership and Trudy from Halton Lea Library.
Trudy is a Development officer from Halton Borough Council Libraries and she spoke to us about a new group she is looking to start up in the Libraries in both Runcorn and Widnes. It will be a group for Adults with a Learning Disability. Her idea is that the group will have themes i.e. music, soaps, holiday etc and there will be a selection of magazines, books for the guys to look through. A 4 week trial will be starting on Wednesday 11th April at 1.30pm in Halton Lea Library for you to go along, see what it’s all about and give your ideas of what you would like to see at the groups.
Sue Molyneux from Halton Disability Partnership informed us of how the Disability Partnership can help us in our role as carers. They can assist in filling in forms for PIP, DLA, ESA, Housing, Blue Badge, Kids DLA etc. They can also now complete a Lasting Power of Attorney for a £200 Donation, I believe if you go to a solicitor this would cost you in the region of £1,600. They hold an Enabled Group at Trinity Church, fortnightly where you can do all sorts of interesting things, i.e. crafts, games, trips out etc. the times are 1-4pm. The next group will be Monday 5th February. Also at the Disability Partnership is Pam Batey who can assist you with employment of Personal Assistants for your cared for, to help with daily tasks, social activities etc. Also on the other side, if you are interested in becoming a Personal Assistant, Pam can also help you get established and into employment.
Due to recent cut backs on funding for Halton Disability Partnership, at present they can only take referrals for carers who are registered at the Halton Carers Centre, as this funding they are still receiving. A process will be put in place and I will let you know how to contact them if needed.
Lous’ evening – In remembrance to Louise we are holding an evening to remember Lou on Friday 23rd February in the Mencap Acorn Centre, with our own resident DJ Adam, please bring your own drink and refreshments, doors open 7pm. We will hold an Irish Bingo and raffle, all proceeds to Halton Haven, admission is £3, pay at the door.
Sharon is going to compete in the Hale Village 5 mile race on Sunday 1st March (Easter Sunday) race starts a the Childe of Hale at 9.30 and Sharon is hoping to complete the course in 50mins approx. She is going to run the race for HALDS funds and I will asking for members to sponsor her for this event. Also if you would like to come along on the day of the race to cheer Sharon on, please do not hesitate to pop along. I will put together sponsor forms and send out via e-mail, I will also have sponsor forms for you to sponsor Sharon. (At least with this one, we can sit in the pub and not have to walk up or down the Great Orme in Llandudno!!!) I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Sharon for thinking of HALDS for this event.
Brenda Hayes is going to hold a coffee morning on Monday 16th April, all proceeds to HALDS funds. If you can bake and would like to bring cakes please do so, there will be raffles and bingo on the morning. Funding – I am pleased to advise that we have received a cheque from Jaguar Landrovers Halewood Operations Employees Charity Fund for £250 which will pay for our printing costs for 2018. Unfortunately we were not successful with our funding bid with Comic Relief.
Imperial War Museum, Manchester, Monday 12th February – Coach leaving Runcorn Old Town bus station at 9.50 am and Widnes Stobart Stadium 10 am. Once at the museum you will be walking round, having lunch at your leisure, we will be leaving for home at 2.30pm.
Birthday meal at Old Hall, Frodsham – Monday 19th February to celebrate HALDS 8th birthday we will be going to the Old Hall Hotel, Frodsham for lunch at 12 noon, Cost to members is £5. Please ensure if you are attending the meal, that you let me have your menu choice asap. There are still places available for the meal if you would like to be added
Friday 9th March 2018 – Weekend at Marlborough Hotel, Llandudno, Theme evenings are confirmed as Friday evening Welsh, Saturday evening Irish & Sunday evening Scottish (fancy dress optional, or colour of the country if possible) Coach cost is £15 per person, which needs to be paid by end February. Coach will be leaving Widnes Stobart Stadium at 12 noon, then onto Runcorn Old Town Bus station and then Frodsham Community Centre. Pick up on the Monday will be 10amish from Llandudno. Those going in their own cars, will have to arrange their own car parking.
There are still payments outstanding for Marlborough, Llandudno, I need to pay the hotel as we go in 5 weeks, so please get your payments to me by end of this week.
Wicked – 12th March 2018, Empire Theatre, Liverpool – This trip is now full, pick up will be Runcorn Old Town Bus Station 5.45 and Widnes Stobart Stadium 5.55pm. Tickets will be given out on the coach
Weavervale Museum/Lunch – Wed 11th April – as we have a lot going on April/May time, I am looking at postponing this trip until October
Chatsworth Flower show/Chatsworth House – Wed 6th June, you can either visit the RHS Flower show or visit Chatsworth House and gardens, Cost would be £20 for flower show or £10 for house visit, cost is per person. Coach would be leaving Runcorn Old Town bus station at 8.30am, so it would be a long day, please let me know if you would like to visit Chatsworth
War Horse – Lowry Theatre, Thursday 28th June – Cost £10 per person for HALDS members and £30 for non members. There are still a few people not paid for this trip, could you please pay by end January
Eurodisney – 24th November 2018 – Cost £525 per person, as this trip will be in excess of £20k, I am unable to pay monies into my bank account and pay via BACS, therefore if you could please pay by cheque, making cheques payable to COGO Travel, alternatively you can phone COGO travel direct on 01273 020 531 to pay via debit or credit card or I can give you COGOs bank details, both the latter please use our reference 011118 and let them know you are with the HALDS group, Please also let me know you have made a payment. Marlborough Hotel Christmas Break away – Friday 21st December to Sunday 23rd December 2018, Friday will be Christmas eve theme and Saturday Christmas day. Cost would be £100 per person plus coach. We would arrive Friday afternoon and cost includes Friday evening meal through to Sunday lunch. We would then leave Llandudno Sunday afternoon for journey home. All guests will receive a Christmas gift from Santa. Please let me know if you would like to come along to this weekend away. Deposits of £50 would not be due until April, then balance for end October

Scams – Cheshire Police are warning about courier fraud, an offender cold calls the victim posing as an official such as a police offer or a member of a bank fraud team, they will instruct the victim to go to their bank and withdraw money. The offencer will claim that they are investigating staff at the bank, that they need the victims help in some kind of undercover operation, for example the bank staff are handing out counterfeit bank notes and they need the victim to withdraw money so that it can be examined. The offender will then send a courier to collect the money from the victim.
