Mays newsletter

Our speaker for Mays meeting was Jane from Tower House Surgery, Runcorn who came and gave us a very interesting talk about what it means being a Carer in the Doctors and also what your Doctor provides for your cared for.

Firstly please ensure your doctor knows you are a carer, and that this is on your records.  You will then be invited in for your annual health check and flu jabs. Last year at Tower House only 40% of carers came for their flu jab compared to 70% the previous year. Over 65 years old you will automatically be called for a heath check.

Ladies between the ages of 50 – 70 you will automatically be called for a mammogram but did you know you can ask for a mammogram when over 70 years of age.  Everyone should check their breasts, men included, not only for lumps but your any changes in their appearance.

Adults with a Learning Disability and their carers are entitled to free annual health checks where weight, height, blood pressure, blood tests for cholesterol, blood sugar levels are taken etc.  Unfortunately only a small proportion of ALDs and carers are having these health checks.

Also only a small proportion of ALDs are having physical health checks, i.e. smear tests and breast cancer scanning.  Even though your cared for doesn’t have an active sex life they are still at risk of the papoloma virus.  Sally Adams will help with smear tests, contraception talks, periods and also talking about the menopause.

Men are not exempt, they should also be checking for testicular bumps.

Over the age of 60 you will get a bowel cancer screening kit through the post, a lot of people do not send off these tests.  It’s not pleasant but should be carried out for your healths sake.  (Imagine the person on the receiving end, opening the kits, that’s far worse then your side of the test)

For men, the signs of prostrate problems will be getting up to pee in the night, more so, if this is not your normal routine or if you can’t pee, if its slow flowing this is a sign of an enlarged prostrate, but if you cannot pee, take yourself directly to the walk in or your doctors.  Also other sign is lower back pain.

Smear test for ladies stop at 64 and you cannot ask for one over that age, even if you doctor carried out a smear, the testing lab will not check it for you.

Funding – I am pleased to announce that we have had an offer of funding of £1,000 from Merseyside Community Investment Fund which will be put towards our Mary Poppins on ice visit in December.

Bingo Evening – Our fund raising Bingo Eve on Wednesday 23rd May raised £284 towards our funds.  Many thanks to the members and friends who supported this event and a big thank you to Kerrie and Vera for arranging the evening.

Although I manage to get funding for HALDS this is not enough for the trips and events we have and we need members to support our fund raising events as without these events we would not be able to offer large discounts on our trips costs.

March newsletter

Please accept my apologies for Marchs meeting, but I went to a funeral of a dear friend in Stoke, but I am sure Liz took good care of you all in my absence.

Unfortunately our guest speaker Laurence from PALS was also unable to make our meeting, but Trudy from the library who came to our meeting in January to talk to us about her new ideas in the Halton Libraries for Adults with learning disabilities came along as her plans are now all sorted and the new group is starting up late April.

Library Learner – Trudy told us about the 4 fun sessions which start on Wednesday 25th April 1.30 – 3pm in both Halton Lea Library and Widnes Library, first session on 25th April will be about ‘Using the Library and finding your way around’ 2nd session on 2nd May will be ‘Using the library computers, see their free magazines and comics online’ 3rd session 9th May ‘Local History. Find out about your town and what it used to look like’ and final session on 16th May ‘Stories and information books. Tell a story’ There will be drinks and biscuits at each session and plenty of activities as well.  If you would like your cared for to attend any of these sessions please contact the library direct on Halton Lea Library 0151 511 7744 and Widnes Library 0151 907 8383.

The Library Learner is open to any adult with a learning disability and their carer.  They are hoping to run the course again if this one is a success and it will be on a different day of the week, so if you can’t make this one because of the day, there will be other opportunities.   Everyone will receive a certificate at the end of the course (even if they can’t make it every week)

Trudy also brought along memory boxes and photographs of Halton as it was then and how it looks now, which I believe was thoroughly enjoyed by the members.

January Newsletter

We had 2 very interesting speakers for Januarys meeting Sue Molyneux from Halton Disability Partnership and Trudy from Halton Lea Library.

Trudy is a Development officer from Halton Borough Council Libraries and she spoke to us about a new group she is looking to start up in the Libraries in both Runcorn and Widnes. It will be a group for Adults with a Learning Disability. Her idea is that the group will have themes i.e. music, soaps, holiday etc and there will be a selection of magazines, books for the guys to look through.  A 4 week trial will be starting on Wednesday 11th April at 1.30pm in Halton Lea Library for you to go along, see what it’s all about and give your ideas of what you would like to see at the groups.

Sue Molyneux from Halton Disability Partnership informed us of how the Disability Partnership can help us in our role as carers.  They can assist in filling in forms for PIP, DLA, ESA, Housing, Blue Badge, Kids DLA etc.   They can also now complete a Lasting Power of Attorney for a £200 Donation, I believe if you go to a solicitor this would cost you in the region of £1,600.  They hold an Enabled Group at Trinity Church, fortnightly where you can do all sorts of interesting things, i.e. crafts, games, trips out etc. the times are 1-4pm.  The next group will be Monday 5th February.  Also at the Disability Partnership is Pam Batey who can assist you with employment of Personal Assistants for your cared for, to help with daily tasks, social activities etc.  Also on the other side, if you are interested in becoming a Personal Assistant, Pam can also help you get established and into employment.

Due to recent cut backs on funding for Halton Disability Partnership, at present they can only take referrals for carers who are registered at the Halton Carers Centre, as this funding they are still receiving.  A process will be put in place and I will let you know how to contact them if needed.

Lous’ evening – In remembrance to Louise we are holding an evening to remember Lou on Friday 23rd February in the Mencap Acorn Centre, with our own resident DJ Adam, please bring your own drink and refreshments, doors open 7pm. We will hold an Irish Bingo and raffle, all proceeds to Halton Haven, admission is £3, pay at the door.
